Thank you for viewing the Gibbs High School website. As we continue to improve this site, I hope that it will be a great communication tool between Gibbs High and your home.
As Principal of Gibbs, I’m very excited about our future and the decisions to be made. Principals are now known as the Instructional Leader of the school, with this responsibility, many of my decisions are data driven. With this in mind, schools are now measured by their Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). This is a report on subgroups of students and how they have progressed during the past school year. Overall, Gibbs has maintained adequate scores but with much room to improve. Graduation rate is an area where many schools have not reached their benchmarks. Gibbs is no different. Although our goal is for 100% of our students to graduate, the state has set benchmarks for us to meet each year. The following are the results of the past few years.
2006-Target = 79.5%, graduation rate = 74.5%
2006-Target = 79.5%, graduation rate = 74.5%
2007-Target = 80.8%, graduation rate = 75.1%
2008-Target = 82%, graduation rate = 73%
2009-Target = 83%, graduation rate = %
2010-Target = 83.2%
In our attempt to improve graduation rate and meet our target, the following interventions are being used or designed to use:
1. Recovery Credit: Computer class for 10th – 12th grade repeating a failed course that had at least a 50% average or above.
2. E-Learning: Computer class for 10th-12th grade repeating a failed course or to receive a new credit if a student is behind on credits.
3. Learning Center: Peer tutoring for at risk students.
4. Advisory time: Small groups of students being led through a specific lesson related to a grade level.
5. Tutorial program for all students: Before and after school tutoring program.
6. Extended library hours: Monday thru Thursday.
7. Adult Education Program: Offered to 11th and 12th grade students.
8. 9th grade academy. Subjects covered: Math, English, and Science.
9. Small Learning Community Program: Teacher collaboration to address programs offered at Gibbs and common assessment through the subject area.
10. Technology: Math Lab, 36 computers for math classes. English writing lab, 36 computers for English classes.
11. Regular Ed Diploma Education: Through assemblies, faculty meetings, PTSA, and community meetings we are promoting the importance and benefits of a child earning a Regular Ed Diploma.
12. Professional Development: Training staff to guide and support all students in their goal of receiving a Regular Ed Diploma.
13. PTSA: Involvement of parents, teachers, and students in supporting the school and community.
The leadership team at Gibbs High meets regularly to examine these and other programs and to plan for the future.
The education that our students receive today will definitely affect this community in years to come. I am a part of this community and will strive to do whatever it takes to make Gibbs High School a leader in education with the Knox County School System.
Lynn Hill
